The Utrecht armchair by Cassina was designed by Gerrit T. Rietveld in 1935 for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam. It was a contract project, where the challenge was to combine design, comfort, and commercial appeal. The combination of separate elements—the backrest and seat that meet at the floor and the armrests that become supports—are an example of the neoplastic movement. The fabric or leather upholstery is available with horse-shoe or zigzag stitching, both available in five different colors.
